Often condemned as merely brutal combat, boxing has been dubbed “the sweet science” to acknowledge the sport’s underlying complexity. More than simple aggression on display, these organized fights are highly strategic both offensively and defensively. This project, which unites images from amateur and professional boxing in the Pacific Northwest, aims to capture more than public spectacle and the performativity of dominance. The photographs reveal private moments of quiet stillness, gritty determination, and internal resolve. They show pain and vulnerability as well as triumphant celebration. Pointing to the principles of discipline and determination as embodied by individual fighters, the series speaks to the underlying values intrinsic to the boxing community.
